Porirua City will be home to some of New Zealand’s best fashion designers and newest talent in modelling after securing the 2016 Miromoda Fashion Runway Show this June.

“Porirua is very excited to be hosting this prestigious fashion show at Pataka and we are excited about seeing local models given the opportunity to strut the catwalk,” said Mayor Nick Leggett.

The Miromoda Fashion Design Competition and Runway Show has been running since 2009. It offers Maori fashion designers an opportunity to showcase their talent and compete for a coveted spot at NZ Fashion Week. Eight designers will be chosen at the Porirua event to show in Auckland.

Porirua City Council is excited to be hosting the show with its partners; Miromoda, The Indigenous Maori Fashion Apparel Board (IMFAB), Porirua Chamber of Commerce, and Pataka.

“We share the desire to advance the quality status of Maori fashion design, artistic and professional standards, and the promotion of fashion arts,” said Mayor Leggett.

“A fun element to this event is that Miromoda intend to use all local models and two of the models will get to walk the catwalk at New Zealand Fashion Week.”

The model call will be held on 21 May at Pataka between 11am and 2pm.

On 25 June the competition will be held at Pataka from 8am until 4pm and be judged by an experienced panel of media and buying experts. The panel will be led by Dame Pieter Stewart founder of New Zealand Fashion Week.

“The Miromoda competition opens up the chance for fashion designers to tap into the incredible experience of business and industry leaders on a one-on-one basis through the judging panel.”

The competition will be followed at 6.30pm by The Miromoda IMFAB Fashion Runway show.

The Runway will include cocktails and finger food on arrival, the show, and an opportunity to purchase clothing from the designers direct. A limited number of tickets are available from Pataka for $60.

MIRO is the technical term used in traditional Māori weaving for twining fibres.
MODA is Italian for fashion.
MIROMODA the Indigenous Māori Fashion Apparel Board (IMFAB) entity was founded in 2008 to advance the quality status of Māori fashion design and to raise its artistic and professional standards.
Miromoda debuted at NZ Fashion Week in 2009, and will head to NZ Fashion Week 2016, for the eighth year including winners and runners up across three categories: ESTABLISHED, EMERGING and AVANT GARDE.
